THINNERS SEGMENTS

A BRIEF ABOUT THINNER INDUSTRY

In India as taste of water and language change every 100-200 kms. so changes the quality & need of thinner. It is because of certain factors which are as follows:

a) Thinner industry is being governed by regional players & they have developed the taste and the need of the particular area in their own way. That is the reason it changes from place to place as player changes.

b) Thinner has a direct relation with the atmospheric conditions, so the formulation & composition of chemical changes. It is because few chemicals have a tendency of endothermic reaction & they can not be used in the coastal areas or in areas where and when humidity level is high in the atmosphere .Because of this humidity, chemicals absorb moisture from the air and badly effects the quality of the product.

c) In areas which have dry climate, few carbon group solvents can not be used with alcohol based solvents as the hydrocarbon molecule when comes in contact with skin it gives burning sensation. So to avoid this ,manufacturers have to change the formulation for the same products.

d) Considering the above constraints still thinner manufacturers are left with many choices to formulate their composition. This again changes the aroma and drying period for thinners e.g. acetone & ethyl acetate in many ways have the same property for the end using thinners. But every manufacturer uses them with their own convenience. This results in change of the quality on apparent level.

For these reasons every manufacture keeping their profitability, availability of the material and their knowledge about the trade and product has created a different quality at different places.

MARKET SIZE OF THINNER INDUSTRY IN INDIA

It is almost 2000 crores industry which is being catered by around 1000 small & big players. The best part of this industry is that having such a big market even as on date there is no any organized sector company in this trade. Although big paint companies like Asian, Burger, Nerolac do manufacture this product, but as said earlier they are unable to break this web of the unorganized sector, nor they are trying to get into this field because as it is very strongly governed & dominated by regional players and having so many qualities, varieties & specific names, it has become a non – economical and commercially non viable preposition for them. Moreover they are concentrating more to their basic line of paints. In this trade few of us are emerging as semi-organized players, who are expanding their wings beyond their regional levels & trying to be national players.

USAGE OF THINNERS

Thinner has got a wide range of usage. It is required in decorative segment, automotive segment, industrial segment and wood finish segment and many more areas. It is used on new surfaces as well as refinishes of any already painted surface.

Decorative Segment- This is a huge segment which covers the wood work of houses, hotels, resorts, offices, restaurants or any place where mankind lives. Wherever wood or steel is used and get polished or painted, the job cannot be completed without thinner. There are many ranges which are used for this category.

Automotive segment-All the automobile industries, whether manufacturing a cycle or motorcycle or any car consumes lot of thinner for both painting as well as cleaning. The idea for the quantum of thinner used in this segment can be evaluated by a live example of a single town usage. In Aurangabad there are around 50 units who are manufacturing O.E.products for Bajaj auto. Their consumption of thinners is around 50,000 ltr/month. This consumption is only by the ancillaries of Bajaj that to in Aurangabad only. This clearly shows the quantum requirement.

Industrial Segment-Any industry which is dealing in steel in any manner has to lay a coating of any kind of a paint or any other chemical coating does need thinner to get their job completed. There are many kinds of industrial paints for different purposes which require different kinds of thinners like stoving thinner for stoving paints, Eppoxy thinner for Eppoxy paints, poly-urethene paint for poly-urethene paints, flamboyant thinner for flamboyant paints. Like this there are many coatings which are applied in industries for different surfaces have to help different kinds of thinners.

Flexo&rotogrevier printing industry also requires lot of thinner to dilute their inks. Screen printing whether a big institution or a cottage industry cannot run without printing thinners.

Foundries that are engage in the casting works requires foundry thinner for burning on the job.

Pharma Medicine stripes packaging requires a shellac coatings for their printing to stick on requires lot of thinners.

Plastic component industry making computer cabinets, telephones, TV cabinets requires special coatings which require special thinners. Cosmetic industries require different kind of thinner for nail polish remover and nail enamel etc. Sports industry requires lot of different coatings, different thinners for their different coating. Wood-Finish segment-This is a very strongly on growing market in the country.

MTO Segment

The Mineral Tarpentine Oil which is popularly known as MTO is being widely used in Paint Industries as solvent. It serve as major thinner in the industrial / consumer market. It is also used in other painting activities and sold in the retail market as dilutants (for painting purpose).

In addition to the paint industry MTO is also used for dry cleaning operations. The entire operations of dry cleaning and washing of clothes is being done by the exporters/ dry cleaners with the help of MTO. The only producers for MTO in India are Bharat Petrileum Corpn Ltd, Indian Oil Corpn Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corpn Ltd. The total market size of this product in India is estimated around Rs. 20K to Rs.30K crores per annum. Recently, Indian Oil Corpn Ltd has stopped production of MTO which resulted only two manufacturers of MTO in India. On account of poor manufacturing capacity in India, an ample scope is available to fullfil the demand of MTO in India through import form Gulf countries. Some importers have already started import of MTO but it is at low level and unorganized.

However the major share of MTO is being replaced by Kerosene which is very unfortunate . As kerosene is banned in India , the people are doing this adulterated work illegally. The Govt. of India (GOI) has to incure a huge amount of subsidy for kerosene which is supposed to be sold to population living under BPL. Now the GOI is well aware about these black marketers of kerosene and is gradually reducing the quotas of kerosene and subsidy amount is being directly credited to deserving people in their accounts. Hence, there has been acute shortage of adulterated MTO i.e. Kerosene in the market.

SPENT SOLVENT Segment

Spent solvent also serve a good source of various thinners. Spent solvent is buy product of Pharmaceutical manufacturing unit. It comprises ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol and many thinners components. These components are extracted form spent solvent through distillation process. The costing of spent solvent is very economical as compared to the finished products obtained through distillation. All these products constitute parts of various thinners independently and/or in combination thereof.
